As we’ve recently mentioned, we are diving in on reviews of baselayers. Baselayers are an overlooked but critical gear item for fly anglers, and too often, we are uncomfortable, sweaty, too hot, too cold, and so on, and this can impact our fishing.

During the heat of the summer, we tried out the Patagonia Capilene Cool Merino Shirt. This short-sleeved shirt is very lightweight and exceptionally breathable. We can sometimes wear a lightweight and breathable longsleeve shirt (such as a button-down) but wear a heavy or insufficient baselayer short sleeve underneath. This is often the piece that gets sweaty and uncomfortable. The Capilene Cool Merino Shirt has “cool” in the name, and that’s the feeling that comes from wearing this shirt. This shirt has a merino and polyester blend that is exceptionally breathable and simply feels good to wear on the hottest of days. This is now a go-to shirt when we want to stay cool on the water.

The Capilene Cool Merino Shirt comes in sizes XS to XXL and currently in colors Sandhill Rust, Plume Grey, and Black. This shirt costs $59.
